1st Rule of Marketing: Get to know Your Customers …..better!
You know you need to define who is your customer. But face it, you’re not going to get to know them overnight. Your customers are dynamic people. As their needs change, you change.
Amazon’s CEO and Founder, Jeff Bezos, describes his approach to customers like this:
“We see our customers as invited guests to a party and we are the hosts. It’s our job everyday to make every important aspect of the customer experience a little bit better.”
Amazon knows a thing or two about getting to know their customer. So, let’s take a page from Amazon’s book, here is the first tip to get to know your customers better.
Neil Patel is one of the most widely recognized names in the online marketing industry. His outline includes templates from HubSpot and Iron Springs Designs, below. We’ll follow along:
1. Build out your buyer persona
A buyer persona is a guide to the individuals you are trying to attract. Typically, a buyer persona would describe one ideal customer or client in great detail.
Here’s a basic buyer persona template from HubSpot.
Within this persona, you can outline basic info about your best target customer. But, you can go much deeper than this if you want to make them the focus of your marketing.
Compare HubSpot’s template to this example from Iron Spring Designs.
Neil describes this approach very well. See how this type of customer profile goes beyond normal demographics?
Behavioral profiling will give you the foundation for building the right messaging for your marketing, keeping you in the right direction.
